Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe was born on June 2, 1943, in Carinaro (Caserta), Italy. He was ordained a priest on March 12, 1967. He taught at the Lateran and Urbanian Universities, and studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. He entered the Holy See diplomatic service and was posted to Brazil, and then recalled to Secretariat of State in 1987. He became president of the Commission for Vatican Telecommunications. On April 2, 1992, he was appointed titular archbishop of Grado and secretary for the Congregation for the Clergy. He was consecrated on April 26, 1992. From 1997 until 2001, he served as General Secretary for the Central Committee for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. On April 9, 2001, he became Prefect for the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. On February 21, 2001, he was created cardinal deacon of God the Merciful Father. He continues to serve as the Prefect for the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In 2006 he was appointed Cardinal-Priest of Dio Padre misericordioso and Archbishop of Napoli. He also serves in the Congregation for the Clergy, the Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and the Council for Social Communications.
