just war / principle of double effect
Question from bill on 10/14/2005:

Father, thank you for taking my question. Does the principle of double effect apply in war when a military target is bombed and unintended civilian casualties result?

God bless,

Bill

Answer by Fr. Robert J. Levis on 10/15/2005:

Bill, this principle of the double effect is all we have on the question of just war. I know of no other. St. Augustine wrote of them.. A nation's rights must be being violated by another, all efforts of peace have failed, and there is a proportion between the foreseen evils of war and the hoped for benefits. God bless. Fr. Bob Levis
