oral sex in a catholic marriage
Question from anonymous on 8/15/2007:

what does the bible say about oral sex in a catholic marriage

Answer by Fr. Matthew Habiger - NFP Outreach on 8/25/2007:

Dear Anony,

What does the Bible say about IVF and ET, cloning, artificial insemination, freezing of human embryos, the 'Final Solution," or hydrogen bombs?

Nothing, because these are possibilities that have arisen in human history many centuries after the last book of the Bible was written, and the Canon of Revelation was closed. We do not expect the Bible to mention by name, and to address, every possible human situation.

The Church finds basic moral principles in both the Old Testament and the New Testament and applies them to contemporary problems, e.g., think of the principle, "all human life is sacred from the moment of conception to one's last natural breath."

Similarly, the Bible does not mention oral sex in marriage, burt the Church has developed a clear sense of God's plan for marriage and the spousal act over the centuries. When He established His Church, Jesus authorized His Church to teach both faith AND MORALS.

Traditionally, the Church teaches that a married couple may engage in oral sex foreplay, but this should always lead to a climax through vaginal sex. Oral sex is not to be used as an alternative to vaginal sex, as a form of birth control.

Cordially yours,

Fr. Matthew Habiger OSB
